The Hijri calendar
What is the Hijri calendar and how is it different from the Gregorian calendar?
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months, each 29 or 30 days long, totalling about 354 days a year. The Gregorian calendar is solar and runs about 365 days. Because the Hijri year is roughly 11 days shorter, Islamic dates like Ramadan move about 10–11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year, cycling through all seasons over about 33 years.
What does "AH" mean after a Hijri year?
AH stands for Anno Hegirae, Latin for "in the year of the Hijrah." It marks years counted from 622 CE, when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina, the starting point of the Islamic calendar.
Why might the date shown here differ from what my mosque announces?
This site uses the tabular Islamic calendar, a fixed arithmetic method that can be computed for any date without observation. Many mosques instead rely on ru'yah, the physical sighting of the new crescent moon, which depends on weather, location, and local scholarly rulings. The two methods can land a day apart, especially at the start of Ramadan, Shawwal, or Dhu al-Hijjah.
How far in advance can I see Hijri dates?
The calendar can calculate any Hijri or Gregorian date, past or future, since it uses a mathematical formula rather than real-time moon observation. Far-future tabular dates are still estimates and may not match eventual moon-sighting confirmations.
Prayer times
How are prayer times calculated?
Prayer times are calculated from your device's coordinates using standard astronomical formulas that track the sun's position relative to your location. Fajr and Isha in particular can vary by calculation method and region, so if your local mosque publishes its own times, treat those as authoritative for congregational prayer.
What happens if I don't allow location access?
If you decline location access or your browser doesn't support it, the site shows prayer times for Mecca as a default so the page still works.
Is my location stored or shared?
No. Your coordinates go directly from your browser to the prayer-time calculation service for that one request and are not stored on our servers or linked to you. See the privacy policy.
Islamic events
How are the dates for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha calculated?
These are projected using the same tabular Hijri calculation, converting the known Hijri month and day of each event into a Gregorian date. Treat these as a planning estimate until your local moon-sighting authority confirms the actual date.
