What is the Hijri calendar?

The Hijri calendar is the lunar calendar used across the Muslim world to mark religious dates. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which follows the sun, each Hijri month begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon, so a year runs about 354 days — roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year. That's why Ramadan, Eid, and other Islamic dates shift earlier by about 10–11 days on the Gregorian calendar each year. The calendar counts forward from 622 CE, the year of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijrah) from Mecca to Medina — the reason years are marked "AH," Anno Hegirae.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the date here sometimes differ from my mosque's announcement?

This site calculates dates using the tabular Islamic calendar, a fixed mathematical method. Many mosques instead confirm the start of a new month by local moon sighting, which can shift dates by a day. For religious practice, always follow your local moon-sighting authority.

How accurate are the prayer times?

Prayer times are calculated using standard astronomical formulas based on your location's coordinates. They're a reliable general guide, but if your local mosque publishes its own schedule, follow that for congregational prayer.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Every feature on this site — the calendar, prayer times, and event countdowns — works without signing up or sharing any personal information beyond optional location access for prayer times.

Is my location data stored?

No. Your coordinates are sent directly from your browser to the prayer-times calculation service and are never stored on our servers. See the privacy policy for details.
